Bewilderment (288pp)
By Richard Powers

Join our Second Saturday Book Group, for a discussion about December’s book selection, Bewilderment by Richard Powers who won the Pulitzer Prize for The Overstory (a 2020 Book Group selection).

In his latest novel, Powers poses a question that touches on our 2023-2024 theme from Amanda Gorman’s Presidential inaugural poem: How do we justify the consequences of our inaction and inertia to the next generation? This time in form of what they are doing to the future of our planet.

Bewilderment, set in the near future, follows Theo, an astrobiologist, and his son, Robin, as they navigate the grief of losing their wife and mother; the fallout from Robin’s Asperger’s, ADHD and OCD diagnoses; and the ongoing destruction of our natural world.

An NPR review of the book closes with this:

“With this novel, Powers continues to raise bold questions about the
state of our world and the cumulative effects of our mistakes.
In Bewilderment, some of these mistakes lead to an upsetting
ending. The result is a sobering elegy sure to spark discussion.”
